About the SHA-256 Hash Generator
SHA-256 produces a 64-character fingerprint of any data; changing a single bit changes the whole hash. Use it to verify downloads against published checksums, create content fingerprints or compute HMAC signatures for webhooks and APIs.
Hashing uses the browser's native Web Crypto API and runs locally.
How to use it
- Choose Text or File.
- Enter text (and an HMAC key if needed) or drop a file.
- Copy the hash or paste an expected checksum to compare.
Good to know
- Plain SHA-256 is not suitable for storing passwords — use a slow password hash like Argon2 or bcrypt.
- File hashing reads the whole file into memory; the limit is 500 MB.
