About the MD5 Hash Generator

MD5 is still widely used for non-security checksums: verifying file transfers, ETags, cache keys and legacy systems. Files are hashed in 4 MB chunks with a progress bar, so even multi-gigabyte files work without loading everything into memory.

How to use it

  1. Choose Text or File.
  2. Type text or drop a file.
  3. Copy the 32-character hash or compare it with an expected value.

Good to know

  • MD5 is cryptographically broken: collisions can be created deliberately. Never use it for passwords or signatures.

Frequently asked questions

Why is MD5 still used?

It is fast and adequate for detecting accidental corruption, where no attacker is involved.

Is the hash case-sensitive?

Hex hashes are case-insensitive; the comparison ignores case.
