About the JPG to AVIF Converter
AVIF can cut photo sizes roughly in half compared with JPEG at similar visual quality, which makes it attractive for websites and image-heavy pages. Browsers cannot encode AVIF through the standard canvas API, so this tool runs the open-source libavif encoder compiled to WebAssembly in a background worker.
Expect a few seconds per large photo; the page stays responsive while encoding runs.
How to use it
- Pick a quality (50–65% is a good starting point for AVIF).
- Drop your JPG images.
- Compare file sizes and download the AVIF results.
Good to know
- AVIF encoding is CPU-intensive; very large images (over 20 MP) may take 10+ seconds on phones.
- AVIF quality numbers are not equivalent to JPEG quality: 60% AVIF often looks like 85% JPEG.
- Serve AVIF with a JPEG or WebP fallback for older software.
