About the Sentence Counter

Readable writing keeps most sentences between 15 and 20 words. Paste your text to count sentences and see the average length, a quick indicator of whether your prose needs shorter sentences.

The counter recognises sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ? …) while ignoring common abbreviations such as “e.g.”, “Dr.” and decimal numbers like 3.14.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Check the sentence count and average words per sentence.
  3. Split long sentences if the average is above ~25 words.

Good to know

  • Sentence detection is heuristic; unusual abbreviations or missing spaces after periods can affect the count.
  • Bulleted lists without periods are counted as one sentence per paragraph.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good average sentence length?

For general web content, 15–20 words. Technical or academic writing often runs longer.

Does a line break end a sentence?

A blank line (new paragraph) does; a single line break does not.
