About the Data Storage Converter

Storage makers use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while Windows and RAM use binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) but often label them “GB”. That's why a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 GB. Convert any value between decimal, binary and bit-based units used for network speeds.

How to use it

  1. Enter a value and its unit.
  2. Read the conversions in common units.
  3. See the full table for every unit.

Good to know

  • Network speeds use bits (Mb/s); file sizes use bytes. 100 Mb/s ≈ 12.5 MB/s.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 KB 1000 or 1024 bytes?

Officially 1000 bytes (SI). 1024 bytes is a kibibyte (KiB).

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

Because 10¹² bytes ÷ 1024³ = 931.3 GiB, which Windows labels as GB.
